LUCIE: ‘Beyond the buzz, it's a question of Europe's digital sovereignty’.

Our CEO Michel-Marie MAUDET was keen to go back over what LUCIE is and isn't...

And, above all, on the real stakes involved in its development.
It was also an opportunity to thank all those who have shown their support since Saturday!

Because beyond the buzz generated by LUCIE and its future development, it's really a question of digital sovereignty in France and Europe.

And even... a civilisational choice!

In this video, Michel-Marie MAUDET, Managing Director of LINAGORA, reminds us that :

  • LUCIE is first and foremost a research project funded by France 2030. The aim of this call for projects is to develop digital commons in the field of generative AI and, overall, what we need to start by doing is training what we call a foundation model.

    LUCIE is currently the intermediate version of this foundation model, which we made available to the community a few days ago. What is important to point out today is that this is an academic research project that is not intended to be a finished product at this stage, still less to be used in schools either now or at the start of the school year in 2025.

  • We are currently in the LUCIE pre-training phase and we have made LUCIE publicly available on the lucie.chat platform for 2 main reasons:
  1. This is in line with our philosophy as a company specialising in open source, and some people are familiar with the maxim ‘Release as often as possible’, which is to compile feedback from users with a view to improving the function and the product;

  2. In the field of LLM, and in particular for LUCIE, we really need users and training data to improve performance and continue training;

And let's not forget that our open source approach is not just about providing a solution for LINAGORA or LUCIE:

The data sets we collect are published and can be used by all the players in the French and European open source AI community.

  • The fundamental question behind all the events of the last few hours is what kind of technology do we want in France and Europe?

Do we want the one in the United States? The one that has been built by stealing your data for years from social networks? And of course we know that this massive and unethical collection of your personal data is what actually enables Big Tech today to have all the data it needs to drive its models. And, as always, we are the products of this gratuitousness!

We need to defend a different digital future for France and Europe...

Either we continue to be digital colonies of the GAFAMs, or we build this third digital path. We initiated this with LINAGORA a number of years ago (25 years) and today it is taking shape with the development of LUCIE.

Since Saturday, we've received a lot of positive feedback and support, and I'd like to thank you all. It's what gives us the energy to keep going!
