CapDigital 2024
Alexandre Zapolsky, founder of LINAGORA, shares his vision and commitment to truly Open Source artificial intelligence (AI). At the recent round table organised by Cap Digital, he detailed what open generative AI means to him.
The essence of Open Source AI
For Alexandre Zapolsky and his team, a truly Open Source AI must meet several essential criteria: no restrictions on use, total transparency of training methods, and availability of the datasets used. These criteria ensure that AI is used freely and ethically, a far cry from the Open Source washing often practised today.
" For us, a truly Open Source AI is one that has no restrictions on use. "
The France 2030 programme and AI
Thanks to the France 2030 call for projects, LINAGORA has been able to develop its foundation AI, Lucie, through the OpenLLM-France community. This initiative brings together more than 850 researchers and engineers who share the ambition of creating truly Open Source generative AI. This public support, in particular access to the Jean ZAY supercomputer, is crucial to the success of this project.
"Thanks to this call for projects on generative AI, we have been able to develop our programme, which consists of making a foundation AI that we call Lucie."
The challenge of business models
It is essential to understand that Open Source and proprietary models are not opposites. According to Alexandre Zapolsky, Open Source AI can perfectly meet the needs of businesses and organisations while promoting a diversity of digital players. He firmly believes that to guarantee European digital sovereignty, it is crucial to promote and support Open Source models.
"Open source AI can address the full range of challenges and needs of all businesses and organisations."
The long-term vision
The fight for Open Source AI goes beyond mere technological or economic considerations. Alexandre Zapolsky believes in the creation of a diverse digital ecosystem, where many small and medium-sized enterprises coexist alongside a few large companies. This digital biodiversity is crucial to the sustainable development of our society.
"It's important to have a diversity of players in AI, just as there is biodiversity in nature."
Conclusion
Alexandre Zapolsky reaffirms his commitment to Open Source AI. At LINAGORA, we are convinced that this approach is not only possible, but necessary to guarantee true digital sovereignty. We will continue to work with passion and determination to realise this vision, because we believe in a future where AI is accessible to all, in a spirit of transparency and freedom.
"We firmly believe that to do sovereign AI, you have to have truly open source AI."
