Wikimania 2026 (Wikimedia France) opens its doors this week in Paris under the theme “Freedom. Equity. Reliability.”

After all, that slogan is almost ours. 25 years of Wikipedia, 26 years of LINAGORA. One year apart, yet sharing the same founding conviction: digital commons are not a utopia; they are the most robust infrastructures humanity has ever built.
Our colleague Benjamin Bellamy will take the stage to defend a central issue: Wikipedia fed the AI revolution. All major language models have been massively trained on its content. Yet most of these models are black‑box, closed, and unauditable, the exact opposite of the values that built Wikipedia.
No open data, no open AI.
OpenLLM chose a different path. Lucie and Luciole are the first French‑language open‑source foundation models built end‑to‑end: training data, methods, weights, everything is open and auditable, just like Wikipedia! A truly free AI can help Wikimedia projects: detecting knowledge gaps, supporting under‑represented languages, improving OCR on Wikisource, structuring data for Wikidata. But it is not magical, and Benjamin will be there to share both the promises, the failures, and the open questions.
And because the freedom of knowledge also depends on accessibility, linto.ai will provide real‑time transcription and translation in nine conference rooms.
