‘Open source is a tool for geopolitical and geostrategic influence! ’
Open source AI: what are we really talking about?
A look back at a question that was somewhat overlooked during the IA ActionSummit, and which the number 1 medium for the start-up and innovation ecosystem in France is now offering an essential educational exercise: in the AI world, a battle is currently being waged between open source AI language models and the closed models of OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google (Gemini) in particular.
Our Managing Director Michel-Marie MAUDET took the opportunity to remind us of a number of fundamental concepts:
- ‘When software is ‘open source’, access to its programming code is free: developers must have ‘all the elements to be able to reproduce, modify, rebuild and adapt it’;
- ‘When applied to AI, the concept of ‘open source’ is ‘very badly used’. Most of the models claiming to be based on this philosophy give ‘more or less restricted access to the source code and the recipe for building the model’;
- ‘China's thunderous arrival in the generative AI race via an open model like DeepSeek also shows ‘a desire to respond to the large closed models’ of the US. ‘Open source is just one of many tools for geopolitical and geostrategic influence’;
Reminder: A truly open source AI must :
- Be reusable with open code;
- With a training model that is itself accessible;
- A downloadable dataset ;
