Inspiring meeting at the ISEP engineering school

An inspiring meeting at ISEP - École d'ingénieurs du numérique!

L3 students at the Institut Supérieur d'Électronique de Paris were lucky enough to attend a fascinating talk by Michel-Marie MAUDET, Managing Director and co-founder of LINAGORA.

The aim of this ‘educational break’ was to help future engineers think about their professional future. It was a great opportunity to find out about the professions of tomorrow, built around open technologies!

Open Source, a bulwark against the GAFAMs

" Over 90% of today's student panel combines the weight of the GAFAMs with Outlook and Gmail addresses, either because you have an Android phone, or because it's an easy way to get free email.

The result raises real questions about our dependence on the digital giants and the management of our data.

As Michel-Marie MAUDET puts it:

" When you're told it's free, you're the product!  "

AI, yes, but Open Source!

LINAGORA is banking on open AI, with models like LUCIE that respect European values, languages and cultures.

" Today's AI is all about knowing who controls whom... Our work with LINAGORA and the OpenLLM-France and Europe community is about moving from the ‘being governed’ to the ‘being independent’ stage."

Explains Michel-Marie MAUDET

Sustainable technologies

The environmental impact of AI models is enormous:

" A model like Chat GPT-3 is equivalent to around 1.3 million Kilowatts, which represents around 300 households in terms of electricity consumption per year and 200 Paris-New York flights in terms of CO2 emissions. "

LINAGORA is committed to a more eco-responsible approach, developing small models optimised for mobile devices.
Following this performance, it is essential that young engineers like those at ISEP are made aware of the issues at stake for a more ethical and sustainable digital future!
