AI & public services: the real issue is not about moving fast. It's about knowing where we're going

During the FMIA - Mediterranean AI Forum, our CEO Michel‑Marie MAUDET took part in the round‑table “e‑Governance & AI panel.”

What emerged very clearly from the exchanges
Yes, AI is already at work in public action: environment, social affairs, health, education, elections… the use cases are real, sometimes already deployed. And indeed, it can improve the efficiency of administrations, strengthen inclusion and the quality of service delivered to citizens.

But one question ran through the whole discussion, almost as a common thread: at what cost, and with which structural choices?
Because the risk is real: creating a lasting dependence on large foreign platforms, especially with Generative AI.

Move fast, yes. Relinquish sovereignty, no. That is the message conveyed by LINAGORA:

Digital Sovereignty is not about doing everything alone. It is about keeping the freedom of choice.

  • Bet on smaller, specialized models, suited to local contexts
  • Rely on Open Source, open standards, and mastered infrastructures
  • Build credible, sustainable alternatives that can be deployed today

Among the ideas mentioned: a Mediterranean network of public‑AI referents, a shared risk‑mapping and safeguard framework, and a common technological foundation built on open, reusable blocks.

One thing is certain: public AI will be neither imported turnkey nor imposed by default. It will be built through deliberate technical, political, and human choices.

And you, how do you reconcile innovation, efficiency, and sovereignty in the public sector?
