A few days ago, another open source Linux distribution shut down... without warning. No end-of-life roadmap, no organised transition, not even a final security update. Just a terse message on a forum announcing the sudden end of support. The result: users caught off guard, forced to migrate in a hurry. And a community, once again, faced with a painful reality.
This kind of scenario is not an isolated case. Too often, free projects supported by large private companies become strategic adjustment variables. Open source is seen as a lever for innovation or a means of reducing costs, rarely as an end in itself. When the vision changes or immediate profitability is no longer there, the curtain falls.
And with it, thousands of hours of volunteer contributions, years of user trust, and sometimes entire infrastructures are left adrift.
Open source cannot be just a tool
At LINAGORA, we have been making a different bet for 25 years: that of sustainable open source. Open source that is not there to temporarily serve a business model, but to build a credible, sustainable, sovereign alternative.
It is this vision that drives us to maintain, develop and document projects such as It is this vision that drives us to maintain, develop and document projects such as Twake, LinTO, LinShare and OpenPaas. These are essential tools designed to be shared, enriched and used without dependencies or restrictions. These projects are governed transparently and designed to stand the test of time, even when the winds of change blow.
We believe that open source is not measured by the number of stars on GitHub, but by its ability to serve others in a sustainable way. By its independence from passing fads. By the strength of its community. And by its ability to remain truly free.
Building the future of free software together
The sudden abandonment of a distribution, shocking as it may be, should remind us of an essential lesson: software freedom requires commitment. Appropriate economic models. Clear governance choices. And a long-term vision.
This is the responsibility we take on every day at LINAGORA, alongside our partners, customers and communities. Because open source deserves better than mere announcements.
It deserves to be respected, cultivated and protected.
