pgBackRest is one of the most widely used tools for PostgreSQL backup. Today, its main maintainer is stepping down due to lack of funding and sponsors, despite massive adoption.
Beyond the announcement, this is mainly a reminder: some critical open‑source components rely on fragile balances, especially in a context where investments are shifting strongly toward AI.
But it also reflects a structural reality of open source. A project can become essential… without its maintenance being guaranteed over time, for economic, human, or simply shifting‑priority reasons.
In practice, everything cannot stop overnight. Switching to another component is not always immediate: sometimes it is simple, but sometimes it involves dependencies, costs, or transformations that take time.
It is precisely in these moments that OSSA (Open Source Software Assurance) from LINAGORA steps in and ensures continuity of critical open‑source components when their community no longer maintains them.
So if you use pgBackRest, rest assured: we continue maintaining this component.
