A look back at DebConf25 in Brest: an inspiring event, featuring JMAP, local AI and the Debian community

We were at DebConf25, and what a pleasure it was!
DebConf is one of the world's major open source events. This year, Debian contributors gathered in Brest, and we were proud to be part of it. Because open source has been in our DNA for 25 years. And because here, we speak the same language: that of passion, technology and digital freedom.

Benoit Tellier kicked off the series of conferences with a humorous presentation tracing the history of the IMAP protocol, highlighting the advantages of the JMAP protocol, now implemented in The Apache Software Foundation's James server, with the support of LINAGORA. As a reminder, James is a true digital commons, which we are integrating as a next-generation server component within our Twake Workplace solution.

This was followed by the conference ‘apt install lucie --from-source’ by our CEO Michel-Marie MAUDET, who asked the audience a quick question to break the ice... and the answer surprised more than a few people:
More people had already run a local AI model than had used ChatGPT in the last 24 hours.

It's revealing, and incredibly promising.
Michel-Marie then shared a guide for easily deploying local AI on Debian, based on Cole Medin's work with Ollama & ShellGPT. Simple, effective, and light enough to run on a CPU. So much so that some people tried installing it live during the conference.
The conference was also transcribed live using LinTO, our 100% open source speech-to-text solution. Because sovereign AI is not a concept for tomorrow: it is already in production at our company.

A huge thank you to the organisers, the Debian community and the entire Freexian team. We leave Brest with a smile on our faces and the desire to continue pushing boundaries.
