LUCIE: the French AI as an alternative to take American and Chinese giants
Speaking on France 24, Alexandre Zapolsky addressed the question of Europe's place in the artificial intelligence race against the United States and China. This discussion followed the Summit for Action on AI, held in Paris on 10 and 11 February 2025.
As soon as it was launched, LUCIE generated a lot of reactions. Many users were expecting a finalised model, even though it is still in the training phase. However, this type of gradual development is common in the field of AI. Our ambition at LINAGORA, with LUCIE, is not to compete with ChatGPT, but to offer a sovereign European alternative, far removed from the dominant solutions from the United States and China.
‘We want AI that reflects European culture and values, while involving users in its development.
The next step is to refine your training through question-and-answer games. With this in mind, LINAGORA launched lucie.chat, initially aimed at a restricted community. However, the enthusiasm of the public exceeded all expectations, attracting thousands of users eager to test the limits of the model.
LUCIE : the LLM foundation really open source
‘We opened LUCIE.chat to allow the community to test and improve our model, but the massive influx of users forced us to close it temporarily in order to continue training.’
LUCIE still has a long way to go before establishing itself as a major player.
‘AI has only just begun, and what we do today will determine its future,’ emphasises Alexandre Zapolsky.
With the support of the European ecosystem and a strong commitment to digital sovereignty, LUCIE could well become a solid alternative to the American and Chinese giants.
